Fuel Cell System: Research for Sustainable Heat and Power Supply

Consortium develops methanol-based fuel cells and burner technology funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK)

A consortium of small and medium-sized German companies and a research institution is working together on an innovative solution for sustainable energy supply. Under the leadership of RIVA Power Systems GmbH & Co. KG , a fuel cell heating system is being developed that uses methanol instead of natural gas and oil. Kroll Energy GmbH focused in particular on the development of a methanol burner. The aim is to efficiently supply households with heat and electricity while reducing CO₂ emissions.

Methanol as a sustainable energy supplier

Fuel cells are considered a pioneering technology for sustainable energy supply. The high-temperature fuel cell heating system utilizes methanol as an energy supplier, offering an efficient alternative to traditional natural gas heating. The robust technology enables flexible and environmentally friendly integration into existing heating systems, making it suitable for widespread use in private households and mobile applications.

Collaboration for innovative energy solutions

The research consortium consists of energy sector experts working together on a innovativa heating solution. The new methanol fuel cell technology is designed to offer high energy efficiency while contributing to the energy transition. “Our goal is to create a sustainable and economically attractive alternative to fossil fuels,” emphasizes Tobias Großkopf, Technical Director of RIVA Power Systems.
